Milwaukee budget woes may lead to mergers, closings

Declining enrollment, no increase in state aid strain spending

The budget forecast for next year in the Milwaukee school district is grim enough that some schools may ask to close or merge with others. Including alternative and charter schools, the enrollment forecast is 83,787 students for next fall, down from 87,360 this year.
