Missouri takes control of St. Louis schools

A transitional three-person board will assume control of St. Louis schools on June 15.

The Missouri state school board has voted 5 to 1 to strip accreditation from the St. Louis school district and take control of the school system. A transitional three-person board will take over St. Louis schools on June 15. In five years, the district has gone from a $52 million surplus to a $24.5 million deficit. The state board also expressed concern about the district's failure to meet state accreditation standards for graduation rates and test scores in math and language arts in the upper grades.The transitional board is to be headed by St. Louis County developer Rick Sullivan.
