Nashville approves 2 charter schools

Applicants were rejected last month and amended their proposals

The Metro Nashville school board has voted to create two new charter schools — Smithson Craighead Middle School, an extension of the elementary school of the same name, and Nashville Global Academy, a K-8 school. After being rejected last month, the schools amended their applications to address some of the district's concerns. Another applicant, Nashville Academy of Science and Technology, was denied.

EARLIER: The Metro Nashville school board has rejected all three charter school applications submitted for the 2009-10 school year, but hopefuls will be able to appeal the decision under state law.
