New chairman for Philadelphia reform commission

Sandra Dungee Glenn has been selected as the next chairman of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission. Dungee Glenn, 49, the primary force behind the district's decision to require all students to take an African American history course to graduate, will officially take the helm next month. A Democrat, she will replace James Nevels, 55, a Republican who is stepping down after schools open Sept. 10.

EARLIER: The Philadelphia School District has lost another top leader, as School Reform Commission Chairman James Nevels--who has been at the governing board's helm since the district was taken over by the state in December 2001--resigned unexpectedly. Nevels says the decision to leave, which came 16 months before his term was to expire, was his alone, but there was widespread speculation that Gov. Rendell wanted him out.
