New York City looks to close or downsize as many as 25 struggling schools

From The New York Times: New York City has laid out plans to close or phase out 19 low-performing schools over several years. Six other schools could have their middle school grades eliminated. Among the schools are two large high schools, Washington Irving High School in Manhattan and Grace Dodge Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx. Each had been expected to receive more than $2 million in federal stimulus money to extend instructional time and improve curriculum.
Earlier....from The New York Times: The New York City Education Department plans to close 12 struggling schools and eliminate middle school grades at three others. The 15 schools targeted for closing or downsizing are ones at which a large majority of the students are not proficient in English or math, according to their scores on state exams.
