Chancellor says cuts would be needed if state doesn't provide a fair share of federal money

From The New York Daily News: New York City might have to cut about 2,000 teaching jobs if the state denies the city its fair share of federal stimulus funding, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says. Klein told City Council members at an education budget hearing that the state is expected to hand over between $360 million and $500 million to city schools in federal economic stabilization funds. If the city gets the lower amount, the average school budget will drop 8 percent in the coming school year, and about 2,000 teaching positions would go.
