New York district passes bonds by one vote

By a single vote (909 to 908), residents of the Pleasantville (N.Y.) school district have approved a $37.3 million referendum to expand the high school and replace its aged boilers and electrical system. But they rejected a $1.6 million plan to install a geothermal system to heat and cool parts of the high school. The district's growing enrollment and antiquated infrastructure were the driving forces behind the high school expansion and renovation. Enrollment is expected to reach 620 in 2009, double that of 1991. Because of the close vote, some opponents of the bond are considering appealing to the state for a recount.
