Acknowledging that the state of New Jersey has fallen short in eradicating inappropriate spending in troubled school districts, including Camden, state Education Commissioner Lucille Davy has pledged more oversight to curb wasteful spending. Davy testified before the state Senate Education Committee to answer questions about recent audits of the Camden school system and three North Jersey districts operated by the state. The audits found unchecked spending and lax internal controls that resulted in millions in "questionable expenses," including $13 million in Camden.
