Chicago principal charged with embezzling from school

As the principal of Nobel Elementary School in Chicago, Mirna Diaz presided over students whose test scores doubled as she fought the crack houses, gangs and poverty outside her schoolhouse door. Now she is fighting a 42-count indictment that accuses her of embezzling about $35,000 from the West Humboldt Park school she served as principal for 20 years. She pleaded not guilty.
