Shrunken Orleans Parish (La.) district opens schools

About 2,100 students showed up for classes Tuesday at the five schools still being operated by the Orleans Parish (La.) School Board. Once the poster child for corruption and academic failure, the district, which also oversees 12 charter schools, has evolved into a small, comparatively scandal-free system of sought-after schools. Most of the schools in New Orleans are under the control of the state-run Recovery District.
