Teachers, parents in New York City question decisions on closing schools

Teachers and parents at the 14 New York City schools targeted for closing so far this year don't understand why their schools have been chosen. The decision to close a school is inevitably subjective, based on factors such as performance on standardized tests, situations of violence, student demand for the school and whether the school seems capable of turning around. So the school system inevitably earns the fury of educators, parents and students asking, “Why our school?”
