Classrooms still crowded in New York City

More than a third of the New York City public school students - and more than half of all high school kids - are in overcrowded classrooms, a report shows. The city would have to create more than 167,000 new seats, far more than its current 63,000 target, to reach its own goals, according to the study.

ALSO: More than 5,000 vacant seats are still available for free universal prekindergarten programs in some areas of New York City, Council Speaker Christine Quinn says. If the seats aren't filled by Friday, the city will have to relinquish millions of dollars in available state funding.
