Parma district will lay off 50 teachers

From The Cleveland Plain Dealer: Economic uncertainty as well as losses at the polls have taken a toll on several Northeast Ohio districts: The Parma board has voted to lay off 50 teachers, most of them at the district's three high schools. The cuts, expected to save $2.8 million, came less than a week after voters turned down a tax request for the third time. Olmsted Falls, where tax issues were defeated in November and February, will cut 24.5 teaching positions and high school electives such as business, industrial arts, German and Latin. Cleveland Heights-University Heights is eliminating the equivalent of 31 full-time jobs, almost a third of them teachers. That amounts to $1.6 million; other cuts will save an additional $700,000. Brecksville-Broadview Heights will slash $1.5 million, mostly through eliminating the equivalent of 37 full-time positions. The 58 people affected include 10 teachers and more than 30 aides.
