The Feb. 12 killing of an openly gay student at an Oxnard, Calif.,
junior high school continues to draw attention from around the world, and
students, parents and others wonder if red flags in the boys' circumstances and
backgrounds had been missed and whether more could have been done to avert the
tragedy. The anti-gay taunts and slurs that 15-year-old Larry King endured from
his male peers apparently had been constant; they grew worse after the slightly
built Larry pushed back by "flirting" with some of his mockers.

FROM FEBRUARY 2008: Ventura County, Calif., prosecutors have charged a 14-year-old boy
with the shooting death of a classmate; they say the killing in an Oxnard
classroom was a premeditated hate crime. Brandon McInerney has been charged as
an adult. Lawrence King was shot in the head early Tuesday in a classroom full
of students at E.O. Green Junior High School. Classmates said King
recently had started to wear makeup and jewelry and had proclaimed himself gay.
Several students said there was a verbal confrontation concerning King's sexual
orientation a day before the killing.
