Panel will step up overhaul of St. Louis schools

June 23, 2008
State-appointed administrative board says it will begin pursuing reforms more aggressively
The Special Administrative Board that took control of the St. Louis School District a year ago plans to begin putting its own stamp on the system. By its second anniversary, the board expects to have a hand-picked superintendent in place, a staff purged of underachieving teachers, and a comprehensive blueprint to get the district back on track, which includes shuttering as many as 20 more schools. If year one was devoted to stabilizing a troubled district, then year two will be dedicated to reforming the culture of a school system that has lost its credibility, academic accreditation and thousands of students to charter, private and county public schools.
