Philadelphia administrator takes superintendent's job in Chester-Upland, Pa

Gregory Thornton, who since 2004 has been the Philadelphia School District's chief academic officer. Gregory Thornton, has accepted the job of chief executive officer and superintendent of the troubled Chester-Upland (Pa.) school district. His departure from Philadelphia means the school system now must find two top leaders. In addition to replacing Thornton, a search is already under way to find a new chief executive officer to replace Paul Vallas, who now heads the Recovery school district in New Orleans. Thomas Brady, a former Washington, D.C., school official and retired U.S. Army colonel, is serving as interim CEO.

EARLIER: After failing for more than 18 months to wrest control of the financially and academically troubled Chester Upland (Pa.) School District from a Republican-dominated board, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell has used a legal maneuver to dissolve the board and put its appointees in place. The chairman of the new empowerment board is Philadelphian C. Marc Woolley, director for strategy and planning for the Delaware River Port Authority. The district, which the state declared financially distressed in 1994 after several deficits, had been overseen by a three-member financial-control board. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
