Plainfield authorities ask school district to allow schools to have rifles in locked gun safes

News release: The Plainfield, Ill., Police Department wants to install locked gun safes to hold rifles in four high schools as a safety precaution to address the possibility of an active shooter entering school. Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek has asked Plainfield District 202 to consider allowing his liaison officers to install the safes at the four high schools under his jurisdiction: Plainfield High School–Central Campus, Plainfield East and North high schools and Plainfield Academy. Joliet Police have indicated they do not intend to take similar steps at Plainfield South High School, which falls under that city's jurisdiction. The school board's Policy, Planning and Administration Committee is scheduled to discuss the proposal next month.
