Principals will get more authority in New Orleans

Oct. 22, 2007
Recovery District superintendent will give principals more autonomy in running schools.

New Orleans Recovery District Superintendent Paul Vallas says he aims to give principals authority to hire their own teachers and administrators, along with more control over their budgets, starting next school year. In a structure that mimics charter schools, which operate largely independently of the central administration, principals in the state-run district also will be able to hire academic support staff such as curriculum coordinators and weigh in on whether to retain custodial or security employees. Principals also will get more control over budgets, particularly in the use of federal Title I grant money, which schools receive to educate low-income students.

EARLIER: New superintendent Paul Vallas has reassigned most of the New Orleans Recovery District's high school principals and intends to hire at least 18 new principals shortly, many who will lead another batch of schools scheduled to open in September.
