Tax on bottled water would have provided $505 million for green school projects

From The Seattle Times: Voters in Washington state have defeated a referendum that would have authorized bonds for school energy retrofits. The green schools measure would have provided $505 million in bonds to be paid back by extending a sales tax on bottled water.

OCTOBER 2010...From The Tacoma News-Tribune: Teachers unions, labor groups and contractors are backing a statewide ballot measure that would issue $505 million in bonds to pay for energy retrofits at public schools and colleges across Washington. Referendum 52 would enable education institutions to replace aging pipes and heating and cooling systems, install more efficient windows and lighting, and make other energy-efficient improvements. Supporters say it will create jobs, save energy costs over the years and create a more healthful learning environment.
