Rutgers stadium bids $18 million over budget Planned expansion of facility will be scaled back

Bids for the expansion of the Rutgers University football stadium in Piscataway, N.J., came in as much as $18 million over budget, according to two officials briefed on the stadium's growing financial problems. The higher costs represent more than 17 percent of the project's $102 million budget. The school plans to scale back the project, but hasn't determined specifics. Officials say reducing seating capacity is an option of last resort.

From September 2007: Rutgers University is putting together plans for a $116 million expansion of its football stadium in Piscataway, N.J. The proposed project would add luxury boxes and more than 12,000 seats. The stadium now seats fewer than 42,000. The improvements would be complete in time for the 2009 season.
