San Diego Catholic school fined, ordered to slash enrollment

City finds Academy of Our Lady of Peace guilty of violating city building codes.

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego must cut enrollment by more than 100 students and pay more than $100,000 in fines and court costs for violating city building codes. The all-girls Roman Catholic high school, which had about 750 students when school began Aug. 27, has been battling neighbors who object to the school's plans to tear down houses and expand. Should school officials fail to reduce enrollment to 640 students and reduce its 60-member staff to 45 by July 1, the ultimate penalties levied could reach $250,000. Annual tuition at the school is nearly $10,000.
