San Francisco will open a new elementary school next fall to accommodate a sharp increase in the number of kindergartners expected to enroll . The still unnamed school will be at the former William R. De Avila Elementary School and will be a Cantonese magnet school for children who want to learn the language or study what they already speak at home. San Francisco school district officials made the decision after receiving about 500 more kindergarten applications for next fall than they had this school year. The new popularity of the San Francisco public schools is a turnaround after years of shrinking enrollment and school closures. About 55,000 pupils are enrolled in city schools, down from nearly 62,000 in 1995. The decline has forced the district to close 10 of its 111 schools since 2003.
