World Series parade costs San Francisco schools

From The San Francisco Chronicle: Higher-than-normal absences on the day of a parade honoring the World Champion San Francisco Giants has cost the city's school district $158,935 in state aid. On an average day, about 48,900 students attend classes in the San Francisco Unified School District. On Oct. 31, the day of the parade, just 44,700 kids were present. Because state aid is based on student attendance, the 4,153 reported absences cost the district $158,935. Most of the reported absences were in high school; about 23 percent of students were absent, compared with about 3.5 percent on a normal day.
