First day for San Diego superintendent

Monday was Terry Grier's first official day on the job as superintendent of
the San Diego Unified School District, but he has already overseen $80
million in school spending cuts and participated in sending a massive batch of
layoff notices to teachers. These are less-than-ideal circumstances to assume
the city's top education post. Yet Grier appeared undaunted as he met with
dozens of students, teachers and principals.

FROM FEBRUARY: San Diego's new school superintendent will take office about three
months early to prepare for up to $80 million in budget cuts that likely will
lead to the elimination of jobs and programs. Terry Grier, who has been an
administrator in North Carolina , says he will start work March 24 instead of
July 1. San Diego County's 42 public school districts face cuts estimated at
$350 million under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed budget, and the San
Diego district, which accounts for more than one-quarter of the county's
students, will take the biggest hit.(San Diego Union-Tribune)
FROM JANUARY: Terry Grier, a North Carolina native who has been at the helm of seven
public-school systems throughout the United States in the past 24 years, has
been chosen to lead the San Diego Unified School District. For the past
eight years, Grier has been the head of the 71,000-student Guilford County
(N.C.) School District.
