Seminole County elementary site contaminated with arsenic

Officials say cleanup will cost $760,000

The arsenic-tainted site for a new Midway Elementary School in the Seminole County (Fla.) district is more polluted than officials suspected, and an expensive cleanup is needed before the school gets built. Initial tests of the site turned up two hot spots, but further testing showed extensive deposits of the poison. The one-time farmland is the fourth site the school board has settled on for the school -- and all four have been contaminated with arsenic. Officials say cleaning the site will cost $760,000 price tag. The district will remove about 15,000 tons of contaminated earth.
