Shelby County, Tenn., official urges legal action to boost state funding

County commissioner says Memphis and Shelby County schools don't get fair share

Contending that schools in Shelby County have been underfunded by the state of Tennessee in years past, A county commissioner wants lawyers to research the possibility of filing suit against the state for "fair and equitable" funds. According to data from the state comptroller's office, county funding for Shelby County and Memphis City Schools exceeded state funding by more than $90 million in 2005 and by more than $145 million in 2006. Commissioner Mike Ritz says in most counties it's the other way around -- state funding exceeds local funding for schools.
