Shrinking enrollment means cuts and closures in East Detroit, Mich.

The East Detroit (Mich.) school district is expected to lose half of its student enrollment in the next decade, according to an enrollment forecast. This fall, the district will close Kantner and Warrendale elementary schools, which is expected to save about $3.5 million in operations and labor costs. As the decline continues, other schools and staff may be laid off. The enrollment forecast shows the number of students will fall from 5,209 students in 2006-2007 to 2,573 students in 2016-2017.
