Some Florida districts may have to curtail construction plans

June 22, 2007
Housing slowdown has reduced property tax revenue.

Some school construction projects in the Palm Beach County (Fla.) School District on track earlier this month may be delayed, and others further delayed, because of a decrease in property tax revenues. The district is grappling with a projected $281 million shortfall for construction projects over the next five years. Almost every one of about 80 projects in the pipeline for Palm Beach County schools could be affected.Click here to read The South Florida Sun-Sentinel article.

ALSO: The Brevard County (Fla.) School Board will have to make changes to its seven-year, $890 million building plan to compensate for an anticipated decline in property tax revenue. The changes could include cutting or delaying projects. Preliminary estimates show the district will collect $5 million less in property tax revenue--the main source of funding for its building plan--than projected this year because of a slowdown in housing construction.
