St. Paul district wants out of charter school business

From The St. Paul Pioneer-Press: TheSt. Paul (Minn.) school district, which sponsored the nation's first charter school about 20 years ago, has decided that it no longer has the means to back such schools. The board voted 6-0 in favor of getting out of the charter business effective July 2011. The move leaves six schools — Community of Peace, Face to Face Academy, Achieve Language Academy, St. Paul City School and Twin Cities Academy middle school and high school — in need of new authorizers if they want to remain open as charters. The schools enroll about 1,700 students.
