Lawsuit says punishment of 2 girls in Beaufort County district was unconstitutional
FromThe New York Times: Racial and constitutional questions have been raised in a lawsuit stemming from the 2008 suspension of students after a fight at their North Carolina high school. Two girls were suspended and denied entry to the district's alternative school, and lawyers for the girls — who are black — say that denying them a semester’s schooling was an unjustified violation of their constitutional right to an education. The case will be argued in the North Carolina Supreme Court and has drawn the attention of civil rights, legal aid and education groups around the country.
