Teacher died in California wildfires

A sixth-grade teacher at Rincon Middle School in Escondido, Calif., was one of the fatalities in the wildfires that struck Southern California last week. Victoria Fox had taught in the Escondido district for 22 years, including the last six at Rincon. Fox's husband also died in the fire.

EARLIER: Students at Westwood Elementary School in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., have returned to classes after wildfires forced cancellations and evacuations last week. About 50 Westwood families lost all their possessions last week when flames struck within walking distance of the school.

Assisted by community volunteers, the Red Cross and county officials, the Borrego Springs (Calif.) Unified School District is sheltering nearly 500 wildfire evacuees at the local high school. Most of the evacuees are from Santa Ysabel, Julian and the Palomar area.

Because of the threat of fire, all schools in the San Diego Unified School District and other districts in San Diego County, Calif., will be closed for the rest of the week.
