Teacher jobs saved, but New York City schools still face cuts

June 28, 2011
Individual school budgets will be cut by an average of 2.4%

From The New York Times: New York City has averted the laying off of thousands of teachers, but the budget does not spare the schools from cuts. The schools chancellor, Dennis M. Walcott, is telling principals that individual school budgets will decline by an average of 2.4 percent. Parent coordinators at high schools could be let go, after-school programs could end and teaching positions could be purged, An estimated 2,600 teachers are expected to retire or resign this summer and will not be replaced, so class-size increases are inevitable.

EARLIER.... From The New York Times: The layoffs of 4,100 teachers in New York City's public schools have been averted. The agreement calls for concessions from the United Federation of Teachers and more money from the City Council. The union has agreed to suspend teacher sabbaticals for a year and permit teachers without a permanent assignment to be used more regularly as classroom substitutes.
