Before turning to privatization, Detroit school bus fleet was plagued by problems

44 percent of 400 buses were cited for flaws during inspections

From The Detroit News: In the last year before deciding to privatize its buses, the Detroit Public Schools was plagued by problems that kept nearly half of its fleet off the road, according to recent state inspection reports. A little more than 44 percent of the district's nearly 400 buses were "red-tagged" during inspections this year. The district now pays three independent companies to transport more than 20,000 students daily. Of them, First Student saw 17.6 percent of the buses it operates in the state get red-tagged. ABC Transportation had only two of 112 red-tagged, and Safeway Transportation had all of its 73 buses pass inspection.
