Two Eastfield College campus police officers were reportedly stabbed on Monday night as they were investigating an individual who appeared to be trying to break into an unused classroom.

The officers were on foot patrolling the Mesquite, Texas,mm campus at about 9:45 p.m. when the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Miguel Sarinana, was spotted. The officers questioned the suspect, who is believed to be homeless.

During the questioning, Sarinana allegedly attacked one of the officers with a knife, stabbing him several times, according to a local CBS affiliate. The second police officer rushed to assist and was also stabbed several times.

“Even though they were receiving blows and they were receiving cuts, the officers kept fighting,” stated Lt. Brian Parrish from the Mesquite Police Department. “When you’re in law enforcement, that’s the important part. Don’t ever give up. Stay in the fight.”

Sarinana fled into a nearby neighborhood as the first officer pursued him. The police force joined the search, and received a call at around 11:30 p.m. from a man in the neighborhood saying that his dog had been barking at something suspicious. Officers conducted a search and found the suspect hiding in tall grass in an alleyway.
