Freshman enrollment at University of Texas in Austin could be highest ever

From The Austin American-Statesman: University of Texas officials project that this fall's entering freshman class on its Austin campus could be the largest in school history. Officials expect about 8,000 freshmen to enroll this fall, up from 7,149 last year. A record 7,935 students enrolled in 2002. Officials are projecting total campus enrollment of 51,500, second to 52,261 in 2002. Firmer figures won't be compiled until the 12th day of the fall semester. In the past, university officials have said that having an enrollment above 50,000 put too much of a space crunch on facilities, but now they say the school is prepared to accommodate the increased demand.
