Program aims to bolster sense of community on campus

Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., has begun a residential college program. Dubbed the Commons, the program comprises 10 residence halls that house professors and first-year students. Rent for professors is free. The experiment goes beyond just living arrangements. The idea behind the $150 million Commons is to enhance a sense of community among students and faculty by engaging both in service projects, evening discussions or watching a football game at a professor's campus apartment.
