Vendors use education conferences to attract business from schools and universities

At the National Association for College Admission Counseling conference in Austin, Texas, the main subjects were college applications, entrance exams and financial aid. But, also clearly on the agenda were a deluge of corporate sponsors and vendors wooing schools for their business. Companies say the gift card drawings, happy hours and other activities are smart marketing--an unavoidable part of how business gets done. But critics say that by partaking of the perks, college officials risk being compromised by corporate influence.
