Voters in Rankin County (Miss.) district defeat bond proposal

$169.5 million plan would have paid for upgrades at most schools in the district

From The Jackson Clarion-Ledger: A $169.5 million bond issue in the Rankin County (Miss.) School District's has failed to gain the 60 percent voter approval required to pass, and officials are looking at how the state's third largest district should move forward to combat its crowding issues. The bond funds would have enabled the district to build and upgrade most of the its 27 schools.

JUNE 2011...from The Jackson Clarion-Ledger: The Rankin County (Miss.) school district has placed a $169.5 million bond request on the ballot in September. The money would enable the district to build a new Northwest Rankin High School for grades 10-12, a new Brandon Elementary School and a new McLaurin High School. Money also would go toward new classrooms, roofs and athletic upgrades and other construction.
