Wake County, N.C., district to review land purchase after questions of conflict are raised

School system bought land from a company with ties to district supporter

Wake County, N.C., school district officials are taking a closer look at land deals after questions over an agreement with district supporter and software mogul Jim Goodnight. Last month, the school board voted to pay $8.7 million to a company financially backed by Goodnight for land to build two schools in Apex. The price was 168 percent more than Goodnight had paid last April. A development partner has said that Goodnight wasn't aware of the sale to the school district beforehand. He also said Goodnight will return to taxpayers whatever profit he might gain from the deal.
