Washington governor floats idea of cutting school buses to close budget gap

Nov 7, 2011 11:59 AM

From The Seattle Times: Facing the likelihood of large budget shortfalls, Washington state Gov. Chris Gregoire is floating the idea of saving $220 million by eliminating funding for student transportation. If the cuts were to become reality, Washington would be the first to eliminate state dollars for bus service, says Bob Riley, executive director of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services. The possible cut is one of many money-saving ideas Gregoire has suggested in advance of a special legislative session later this month.
