Foundation grant would help district provide services

The Waukegan (Ill.) District 60 school board is looking to develop a school-based health center at its Upper Grade Center using a $25,000 grant from the Healthcare Foundation of Northern Lake County. If the center opens, it would be the first school-based health center of its kind in Lake County, and one of 55 in Illinois. Waukegan is considered a medically underserved area. During the past six years students have shown a 60 percent increase in asthma, 33 percent increase in diabetes and a 166 percent increase in obesity.
