Illinois district votes to close elementary

The smallest school in DuPage County, Ill., will be closed by the fall, the Westmont Community Unit School District 201 Board has decided. By a 7-1 vote, board members overcame pleas from some parents to save South Elementary School, a neighborhood fixture since 1921. About 150 pupils walk there each day, but elementary enrollment across the district is sagging, and the district could save hundreds of thousands of dollars by having two, not three schools.
