Kanawha County (W.Va.) schools gets $1.5 million grant for flood relief

Sept. 23, 2016
District needs to rebuild two schools heavily damaged in June floods.

The Kanawha County (W.Va.) district is receiving a $1.5 million federal grant for flood recovery efforts.

The funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will help Kanawha County repair and replace facilities damaged or destroyed in June flooding, as well as other flood-related issues, according to a news release from West Virginia's two U.S. senators.

The flooding caused serious damage to several Kanawha County schools. District officials have determined that Hoover High School and Clendenin Elementary School sustained too much damage and will have to be rebuilt.

Earlier this month, FEMA approved the district's plan to place portable classrooms at Elkview Middle as a temporary home for Hoover High School and at Bridge Elementary to accommodate students who attended Clendenin Elementary School.
