Editor's Focus: Growing Green

Jan 1, 2012 12:00 PM, By Joe Agron (jagron@asumag.com)

Joe Agron, editor-in-chief of American School and University

With the start of a new year, hope, optimism, and the desire for a fresh start in various aspects of personal and business life emerge. Whether it is a desire to exercise more, eat better, improve relationships or attain a specific goal, the month of January ushers in the opportunity for all of us to implement a strategic plan for the rest of the year and beyond.

In recognition of this, every January American School & University publishes its Outlook for the current year and beyond—taking a look at what's ahead for education facilities and business operations, and providing insight into how school and university administrators can better prepare to ensure success. Outlook 2012 examines various key areas that will continue to pose challenges, and provides commentary on such things as construction trends, education funding, equity in education, enrollment, maintenance and operations, security, technology and more.

Another area covered in Outlook 2012 is sustainability initiatives, which have continued to grow in importance in all aspects of school and university operations, and have gained increased favor on the administrative front because of the long-term cost-savings, as well as occupant health and environmental benefits, that result.

In recent data provided by the U.S. Green Building Council's Center for Green Schools, the number of LEED- (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered K-12 and higher-education projects continues to grow. For a list of the 10 states with the most LEED-registered projects, visit www.ASUmag.com and click on the "Web Exclusive" link.

2012 is sure to be another challenging year. Make sure you are receiving the information you need to stay ahead of the curve. AS&U will continue to bring you the insight and intelligence you expect to help guide you through the increasingly difficult education landscape.

Here's to a healthy, happy and rewarding New Year!
