Minnesota College Eliminates Bottled Water (with Related Video)

Sept. 1, 2011

Bottled water no longer is available at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

The college is eliminating the sale and provision of bottled water as part of its overall sustainability initiatives. Bottled water no longer will be sold at the campus store, food concessions, athletic events or vending machines, the university says.

Many environmentalists have objected to the proliferation of bottled water because the amount of energy used to produce bottled water far surpasses the amount of energy used to provide clean tap water.

The college is upgrading its water fountains and will continue to have jug water stations throughout campus and at college events, the university says.
