The Monroe Township (N.J.) school district has broken ground on an environmentally friendly elementary school. The $22.39 million school will include 280 photovoltaic panels on the school's gym roof at a cost of $560,000. A $420,000 rainwater collection system would consist of a 50,000-gallon underground storage tank that would gather rainwater, filter it, chlorinate it and then pipe it back into the school to be used to flush toilets. School officials say they are aiming for a gold-certified LEED status from the U.S. Green Building Council.
