Four Education Facilities Join EPA Contest to Reduce Energy

Jun 1, 2010 12:00 PM

Two elementary schools and two residence halls are among 14 buildings from across the United States that are competing to reduce their energy consumption and win the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s first-ever National Building Competition.

Nearly 200 facilities owned or managed by an Energy Star partner applied to be among the 14 buildings chosen for the contest. The competition measures the percent energy-use reduction between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010.The building that sheds the most energy waste will be recognized as the winner, the EPA says.

The school-related facilities: Van Holten Primary School in the Bridgewater-Raritan (N.J.) Regional School District; Crystal River Elementary School in Carbondale, Colo., and the Roaring Fork School District; Morrison Residence Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Tucker Residence Hall at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Other facilities taking part include office buildings, hotels, department stores and convention centers.

In order to participate, organizations must have been benchmarking the monthly energy use of the nominated building with EPA’s online energy tracking and measurement tool, Portfolio Manager. The winner will be announced in October.
