2 fountains on University of Georgia campus are using recycled water

May 13, 2009 5:00 PM

From The Athens Banner-Herald: Two ornamental fountains on the University of Georgia campus that were turned off for more than a year are operating again -- but now use recycled water. A large fountain at Herty Field began spouting jets of water into the air last week, and a smaller fountain near the administration building started spraying the week before. University officials cut the water supply to both fountains during 2007's drought. But this spring, even as ample rains filled area reservoirs, UGA engineers devised ways to refill the fountains without violating rules against using drinking water in fountains. Instead of treated water from Athens' public water system, the fountains are pumping recycled water collected on the campus -- rainwater, on-campus wells and lakes and water that condenses on air conditioners in nearby buildings.
