Pennsylvania school will include sewage treatment facility

The Western Wayne (Pa.) School District is planning to build an environmentally friendly elementary school in Hamlin. The campus will include an on-site sewage treatment facility called a Living Machine, housed in a stand-alone greenhouse. Natural biological processes will treat wastewater, which then can be reused to irrigate sports fields and flush toilets. Dedicated areas in the greenhouse will be designed for student projects. Ninety geothermal wells, 400 feet deep, will recycle natural heat.
A roof top garden will allow outdoor classroom use.
