Construction Zone: Research facility

Indiana University, Bloomington, has completed a 140,000-square-foot facility to support promising research initiatives for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Simon Hall is the first science building on campus specifically designed for multidisciplinary investigation and will increase available laboratory space, allowing the college to expand teaching and research activities.
In order for the building to fit within its surroundings, it needed to complement the distinctive limestone buildings and Collegiate Gothic architecture of the existing structures. Because space was limited, scale was important in the building's construction. Part of the facilities are situated underground.
Strategically placed at the intersection of the chemistry, biology and biochemistry departments, the building provides researchers with centralized resources such as laboratories, technical support areas and analytical facilities. The building acts as an extension of each department's research interests.
The architect for this project is Flad Architects (Madison, Wis.).
